Most of us, are indoors at home, school, and work in the morning, not going outside into natural sunlight until noon. The concept of sunlight falling in the morning may be foreign to us. I would like to suggest exploring the possibility of exposure to sunlight outside.
If possible, try to go out 15-30 minutes before noon, or at least in the afternoon. Remember that while indoor lighting is useful for viewing, it is not the same spectrum as outdoor sunlight.
When sunlight enters a person's eyes, it activates receptors that send stimulatory nerve inputs to the brain. The brain then sends signals to all the trillions of cells in the body through a process called photobiomodulation.
Photobiomodulation tells the body what time of day it is. Humans are everyday creatures. By routine, we usually go to bed after dark and continue our work during the day. But, we must use the light of day and the darkness of night to guide our daily rhythms. If we don't create this normal rhythm, we won't get proper, natural, restorative sleep.
By going out early in the day, we develop a better cycle to be active during the day and sleep better at night. Bright light, even on a cloudy day, gives our brain enough full spectrum stimulation when we get sunlight.
It's not too difficult to adapt our plans to the lifestyle to take in the sunshine tomorrow. For example, the owner of the house can do work in the yard outside in the morning instead of in the evening. People who live in condos or apartments only need to go for a walk before noon for exercise. Small children who stay at home will sleep better at night if they are encouraged to play outside compared to the morning.
Those who work indoors can park their cars or take public transport a little earlier and walk outside for 15-20 minutes to catch the morning sun.
School-aged children go outside to rest in the morning so that they are in good condition to receive the early sunlight. Older children who don't have recess can walk to school if it's close, or get to the bus stop early to take advantage of the open day.
It may take a few weeks of doing what is here to establish a normal daily rhythm and a normal sleep pattern. When the benefits of a good night's sleep are reaped, it can have a profound effect on improving many aspects of our health and life.
