They say health is wealth. This saying is true! But how have we taken this topic of health? It has also been said that how you make your bed is how you lie on it.
How we value a problem determines how we approach it. Our healthcare is on the brink of destruction and unless the government takes decisive action it will be a disaster. No unhealthy nation can ever produce healthy citizens.
There was a time when our healthcare system worked well. You walk into the hospital and see how coordinated they are and how they will take care of you. Private hospitals were not a problem at all and were few and far between. Medicines were available, services were provided free of charge, and professionalism was valued. Everyone does their job well. Patriotism was at the fore, but somewhere we missed it.
Besides the government's nonchalant attitude towards healthcare, doctors have played a vital role in the destruction of our healthcare system. Now I know you may be thinking that this may be a false accusation, but before you jump on me, follow me. Now, if you've been to the hospital, you'll agree with what I'm about to tell you.
First, the monetary gain from them won the majority against trying to save humanity. This worm has crept into their fabric to the point where they have forgotten humanity and hunted for mammon! Second, they have started diverting patients to the private clinics that they have established or to the clinics and hospitals of their colleagues, as a result of which they pay little or no attention to the public hospitals that the majority of the population can enjoy: Also, any good things that the government provides. public hospitals, whenever appropriate, divert to their private clinics or hospitals. This affected the public hospitals and we have not recovered since then.
The government didn't help matters either. The culture of supervision and inspection died, where it is, it was not done, but only. Inspectors usually only do it for their own pockets: The infrastructure was left dilapidated without any attention; our hospitals now look like piggy banks, smell everywhere in a country so blessed by God and gifted with anything but leadership.

The manner and manner in which our leaders travel abroad for medical examinations and treatment is a vote of no confidence in our healthcare system; that is what they are supposed to fix, but they abandon all this and pack up our commonwealth, I mean our expenses, which they add to the wealth of other nations! What's wrong with it? Suppose these states did not work hard to develop their health sector to this standard, what would they do? But not! They prefer to travel abroad for treatment. Imagine US President Donald Trump going to India for medical treatment! No one else will build our nation for us, only in Nigeria I know you renovate and clean your house only when you are going to receive an important guest. This need to change: leaders expect leadership to change when they are unwilling to change themselves. A good leader leads by example and followers follow.
In the 2016 budget, N3.87 billion was earmarked as capital allocation in the budget for the state clinic, which is more than all federal teaching hospitals in the country so far; last year, the clinic was hit by a shortage of drugs. The President traveled to the United Kingdom for treatment and at the time of writing, President Muhammadu Buhari is already in the United Kingdom for further treatment. The question is how many people have access to the state clinic? And compare that to the larger population that can't even afford regular Panadol. According to Vanguard, the Principal Special Adviser to the President on (Media and Publicity), Garba Shehu in a statement explained that the State House clinic is not the personal clinic of the President or anyone but a clinic that caters to government officials and others. According to him, the increased expenditure on government health facilities in the current budget must be seen in the light of the President Buhari administration's plan to improve domestic health facilities as well as discourage citizens from medical tourism, which hurts the country's foreign exchange reserve. Those were the words of Garba Shehu ad verbatim!
My view is that if they want to improve the government's healthcare institutions to discourage citizens from medical tourism which hurts the country's foreign reserves, a concerted effort should be made to do that. If this money is used, it will be possible, but until then Mr. President was engaged in medical tourism.
Now you can see why I said our leaders helped destroy our healthcare system! When will we fix it? Why should we count on such huge sums and yet go abroad for the same purpose? The answer is that our leaders passed a vote of no confidence in our health system and because they can afford medical tourism according to Mr. Garba Shehu, they don't mind if less privileged Nigerians cannot afford it. As such, they left us to our fate! Now it's "To your tents, Israel!" It is a shame! It is a disgrace to any leader who allows this during his regime. Leaders must know that God is bringing them there for a purpose and that this is an opportunity to serve God's people. Thus, when serving, serve well.
In conclusion, every responsible government must provide social facilities like roads, schools, hospitals, medicines, etc.
