While you may not know what research chemicals are, we are currently experiencing an increased risk of abuse of these chemicals in the US and the world at large. Existing drugs are researched and experimented with so that scientists can better understand their structure, activity, general behavior, interactions, and side effects. Studying existing drugs in laboratories can advance our collective knowledge of the substance and help save lives in the future. But, this research can change existing drugs to provide what are called "designer drugs".
These designer drugs often have similar effects to the drug that was investigated, but the chemical structure of the designer drug is usually different from the original drug. This distinction is key – where one original drug might be illegal and known to be dangerous, for example, a designer drug might gain popularity because it is not the same as the original drug, and thus not illegal in some jurisdictions.
The term "research chemicals", once clever marketing jargon, has further confused the issue. The term may seem scientific and safe to users if drugs are anything else. Meanwhile, the term could throw off law enforcement agents or others who are under the impression that research chemicals are somehow different from brand-name drugs.
Research chemicals are designed to be effective. They act in a specific way on the brain, very inducing hallucinations, feelings of pleasure, relaxation, or stimulation. Dangerous side effects last a long time, with little understanding of how long the chemicals will bind to receptors in the brain or how they are metabolized out of the body.
Yet the widespread production and distribution of these substances for dangerous recreational abuse is a new problem facing the United States.
Signs of abuse
There is no sure way to identify misuse of research chemicals and brand-name drugs. Because these drugs are designed to mimic existing drugs of all types in some cases and behave like any original drug in other cases, the signs and symptoms of drug use and abuse vary. One way to help identify abuse of research chemicals is to become familiar with the signs and symptoms of related drugs, as well as known brand-name drugs on the market as information becomes available. In general, there are general signs of drug abuse that can help you identify the abuse of one of these drugs. Be sure to watch:
- Appearance changes
- Changes in behavior
-Changes in performance at work or school
-Decreased interest in drug-free activities
-Depression
-Anxiety
- Mood swings
- Social changes which may include new friendships
-Secret
- Changes in energy levels
-Dizziness
-Nausea
- Changes in affection
